The play on Naylor’s hit turned into a mess, though. Jarren Duran’s relay throw sailed over third baseman Caleb Durbin’s head, allowing Rodríguez to score another run in a defensive breakdown that cost Boston dearly. Patrick Sandoval lasted only four innings and one batter, giving up three runs on five hits while his record dropped to 1-4 after the loss. The bullpen tried to help, but the hole was too deep. Cooper Criswell pitched a scoreless ninth to get the win, but the game was already over by then.
Seattle’s Power vs. Boston’s Struggles
Boston did have one bright spot in the darkness. After missing 101 games, Roman Anthony finally connected for his first home run. He had missed time with a sprained right wrist (a nagging injury that sidelined him for months), so that single home run was a rare moment of hope for the fans. The Mariners, however, had too much offense to stop. Julio Rodríguez, Josh Naylor, Dominic Canzone, and Randy Arozarena all added RBIs for Seattle, combining for 25 runs total over the three-game series. That’s an average of more than eight runs per game, a number that wins championships, not just single games.
Bryce Miller started for Seattle and held his own well enough. He lasted 4 2/3 innings, allowing one run off seven hits while striking out three. He did the job well enough to let his offense take over, something the Red Sox starters simply couldn’t match in terms of stability. Now the teams move on to new series. RHP Logan Gilbert takes the mound for Seattle on Thursday night. He will face the Athletics at home with a record of 11-8 and a 3.42 ERA. Boston heads to Baltimore to play Ranger Suarez. Suarez has a 9-6 record and a 3.27 ERA. The Red Sox need to fix their defense fast if they want to stay in the hunt.
Tracy Responds To Critics
Chad Tracy has been pretty candid about the teams struggles adding that they are “adapting” to the situation in the bullpen.
“We’ve struggled. We’ve definitely struggled,” Tracy said. “But certainly the season ebbs and flows. We’re going through a little bit of a rough patch. If we string together some good starts, we’ll be in good shape.”
Tracy also added that reliever Justin Slaten has continued to experience soreness in his elbow after starting his throwing program. Rather than risk making a bad siuation worse the team has decided to pull back.
“Until we feel like there’s complete resolution of symptoms, we’re not going to ramp him up,” Tracy said.
One wild pitch can change a game, but three games of 25 runs is just insane. Now, the Sox’s are headed to Baltimore for a four-game series; Jake Bennett will open the series tonight. Let’s hope they can reset this weekend and patch things up.
