The New England Patriots put on an absolute show Sunday, dismantling the Las Vegas Raiders 45-17 in a game that featured just about everything Patriots fans could have wanted.

Drake Maye threw four touchdown passes. The offense rolled up a ridiculous 536 yards. New England improved to 3-2, picking up its second straight victory.

Not a bad afternoon at the office.

Patriots Rookie Caleb Lomu Steps Up After Will Campbell Injury

But while everyone was busy celebrating Maye and an offense that suddenly looks awfully dangerous, something else happened that could have a lasting impact on the Patriots.

A rookie offensive lineman got his chance. And he didn’t waste it.

Caleb Lomu, New England’s first-round selection in the 2026 NFL Draft, suddenly finds himself staring at an opportunity that could change his role considerably over the next several weeks.

And it all started with an injury nobody wanted to see.

Starting left tackle Will Campbell went down with a right knee injury during the first half against Las Vegas. He never returned, leaving the Patriots scrambling to protect their young quarterback.

Enter Lomu.

Now, here’s where things get interesting.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Campbell is believed to have suffered a knee sprain, with an MRI scheduled for Monday.

The early expectation is that Campbell could miss additional time, although the extent of the injury remains uncertain.

That’s certainly not what New England wants to hear, especially with the offense finally finding its groove.

But the Patriots might have a pretty interesting answer already sitting on their roster.

Lomu, whom New England traded up to select with the No. 28 overall pick in April, hasn’t exactly been a fixture in the starting lineup.

Through the first four weeks, the former Utah standout was primarily working as a reserve tackle or checking in as an additional blocker.

In other words, he was waiting for his moment.

Well, Sunday that moment arrived.

Caleb Lomu Impresses After Replacing Injured Patriots Starter

Lomu played a career-high 47 offensive snaps after Campbell went down. And according to Sports Illustrated’s reporting, the rookie surrendered just one pressure.

One.

For a young tackle suddenly thrown into the action against an NFL defense, that’s a pretty encouraging afternoon.

And judging by his comments afterward, Lomu wasn’t particularly rattled by the situation.

“I was ready to go,” Lomu told reporters following the victory.

Short, sweet, and exactly what Patriots fans probably wanted to hear.

Of course, filling in for an injured starter during a blowout is one thing. Preparing to start an NFL game when opposing defenses have an entire week to game-plan against you is something else entirely.

That’s the challenge Lomu could be facing.

There’s one important detail working in his favor, though.

Left tackle isn’t some foreign position the Patriots are asking him to figure out overnight. It’s the same position he played at Utah before New England spent a first-round pick to bring him aboard.

The question isn’t whether Lomu knows the position.

It’s whether he can handle the responsibility consistently at the NFL level.

And depending on Campbell’s MRI results, the Patriots might find out sooner than anyone expected.

Patriots Face Tough Offensive Line Decision Ahead of Jets Matchup

The schedule certainly isn’t doing New England any favors.

The Patriots host the New York Jets next Sunday before heading to Chicago for a Thursday night showdown with the Bears just four days later.

That’s a tight turnaround for any team, never mind one potentially trying to shuffle its offensive line while protecting a quarterback who just accounted for five touchdowns.

And that’s what makes Campbell’s injury such a significant development despite Sunday’s lopsided score.

New England finally has some offensive momentum. Maye is producing. The Patriots are winning games.

The last thing they need is trouble along the offensive line.

But here’s the flip side.

The Patriots invested a first-round pick in Lomu because they believed he could eventually become an important part of their offensive line.

They might be about to get an extended look at that investment much sooner than planned.

Campbell’s MRI will help determine what happens next.

In the meantime, Lomu has already shown he can step onto the field when his number is called.

Now comes the much tougher question.

Can the rookie make the Patriots comfortable leaving him there?
