Patriots’ Historic Week 1 Meltdown Is A Wake-Up Call

New England made NFL history for the wrong reasons. A brutal fourth-quarter collapse proves one loss means nothing if the team can't fix its mistakes.

The New England Patriots won their season’s home opener with a gritty 20-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. This was not a pretty game, but the defense made sure the result mattered. They held Aaron Rodgers and his offense to just three points while forcing critical turnovers. As CBS Sports noted, New England earned their first win of the season against a sluggish Steelers attack.

Maye Finds His Rhythm Despite Mistakes

Drake Maye did not play a perfect game, but he did enough to win. The 24-year-old quarterback completed 14 of 22 passes for 208 yards with one interception. He avoided the reckless mistakes that cost them in Week 1. According to Pats Pulpit, Maye threw his fourth interception of the season but also delivered a massive 63-yard strike to set up a score. He finished 7-of-9 passing for 89 yards in the first half alone. The team needs consistency, and this performance showed they can win even when the offense sputters.

However, after the game, Vrabel got a little testy with a reporter who, despite the win, criticized Maye.

The reporter asked, “What’s your concern level with Drake Maye and the offense right now?”

“Just tryna win the game, Ben. You’re not gonna ruin my Sunday, but I’ll come back to you tomorrow. Thanks, bud,” responded Vrabel.

Henderson and Doubs Step Up Big

When the starting running back fumbled, TreVeyon Henderson took over and scored a 39-yard touchdown. With 76 rushing yards, he led all players on the field. Romeo Doubs also proved vital after a rough debut, catching three passes for a team-high 96 yards. Per Sports Illustrated, Doubs turned in a diving 29-yard conversion and a 63-yard play that stretched the field. These two players gave the offense the big chunks it desperately needed to stay ahead.

Injuries Mount But The Win Stands

The victory came at a cost, as the starting offensive line took its first real hit. Right guard Mike Onwenu left the game in pain after colliding with T.J. Watt and ESPN reports he has a broken ankle. The Patriots’ defense stepped up, and Maye scored when it mattered. The team moves to 1-1 on the season and will not prepare for Jacksonville.
