The Celtics dropped 44 points in the first quarter against Chicago. See how Payton Pritchard and the bench turned a game into a blowout.

On the second night of a back-to-back, Jayson Tatum scored 40 points in 42 minutes. That is not a recipe for a championship. It is a recipe for a broken body. But Joe Mazzulla did not blink. He watched his star play until the buzzer against the Brooklyn Nets and then doubled down on the plan. The Celtics won 125-124 in overtime, but the victory came with a heavy cost in wear and tear. This was a gamble that could define the entire season.

The coaching staff knew the risk. They also knew they had to trust their data. Mazzulla told reporters that this specific moment is where the team relies on their sports science team. He said, “This is where you trust Nick [Sang] and our sports science team. This is where you build [with rotations and shift length]…because you know nights like this are gonna come up.” That quote changes how we view the roster. It is not just about talent. It is about managing the body.

The Shift in Physical Play

The old way of thinking focused on size and bulk. That approach is dead in the modern NBA. Former Celtics strength coach Bryan Doo explained the change years ago. He noted that “pure size and mass isn’t the big thing anymore.” The game has become faster. It relies on speed and movement patterns rather than just brute force. Doo added, “It’s a quick game.” This shift explains why Tatum can play heavy minutes without collapsing. His body mechanics fit the new style.

Yet, the minutes still add up. The team played 48 minutes of regulation plus overtime. Tatum was on the floor for 42 of them. That is an incredible load for a player who needs to last 82 games. When reviewing film, Mazzulla admitted the team would treat this win as a loss. The sloppy play and turnovers were a warning sign. They added more miles to the odometer early in the season.

Trusting the Data Over the Gut

Why did they not rest Tatum? The answer lies in the medical staff’s history. Against the 76ers in a Game 7 last spring, this same group sat Tatum out. They made a tough call then to protect the star. Now, they are making the opposite call to win a regular-season game. Mazzulla explained the logic after the win against the Nets. He said, “At the end of the day, it’s two-fold. We trust the sports science team that we have. We trust the competition of those guys.”

This trust extends to the whole roster. The team used younger players like Baylor Scheierman and Payton Pritchard to start overtime. They returned to the floor after a rough two-minute stretch. The coaching staff believes the depth can handle the pressure. Assistant coach Gonzalez noted, according to CelticsBlog, “We’ve got a lot of good players that have proven that they can play at a high level and contribute to the team at any certain point.” The system relies on this depth to survive the grind.

The Road Ahead for Boston

The Celtics face a brutal schedule ahead. Back-to-backs will happen again. The league is full of traps for teams that do not manage their minutes. Tatum has the most game-winning shots in the last three seconds to play since the 2019-20 season, per reports. He can close games. The question is whether his legs can carry him to the end of April.

The team cannot afford to rest now. They need to win every night to build momentum. But they also cannot break their best player. Mazzulla’s decision to play Tatum 42 minutes was bold.
