Matt Turner is staying in New England, and the structure of how he is staying is the part worth reading twice.
The Revolution announced Monday that they extended Turner’s loan from Olympique Lyonnais through December 31, 2026. The club holds an option to extend a second time through the end of 2027, and only after that second loan does an outright purchase option come into play.
This is not a permanent transfer. It is a longer runway toward one.
The roster mechanics may end up mattering more than the timeline. Turner has spent the past year classified as a Designated Player, the category whose salaries sit outside the MLS salary cap. Monday’s announcement describes him as TAM-eligible, meaning the club can absorb his contract using Targeted Allocation Money instead.
That potentially frees a Designated Player slot. New England could still keep Turner in the DP category if the cap math favors it, but the option now exists to spend that spot on a significant midseason addition.
None of it changes what he has been on the field. Turner is 32 and has a real case as the best goalkeeper in MLS this season. His shot-stopping is a meaningful part of how the Revolution reached fourth in the Eastern Conference before the World Cup break, the same way it swung results during his first run here between 2018 and 2022.
He returned last August on the one-year loan that was days from expiring. He rejoins a team that restarts its season on July 22, hosting Toronto FC at Gillette Stadium.
