Carles Gil is going back to the MLS All-Star Game, and he is going alone.

The Revolution captain was named Wednesday to the 29-player roster that faces a LIGA MX selection on July 29 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. He is New England’s only representative.

That is the part worth sitting with. The Revolution have put together a good first half of the season and it produced exactly one All-Star.

Gil also did not arrive by vote. He came in as a coach’s selection from Charlotte FC’s Dean Smith, which is a compliment from a peer rather than a popularity contest, though it does say something that the ballot did not carry him there.

The 33-year-old has five goals and four assists in 14 matches this season.

This is his fifth All-Star selection. Gil came to New England in 2019 from Deportivo La Coruña and was immediately voted into the MLS Best XI while taking Newcomer of the Year. He won league MVP in 2021 and belongs in any conversation about the best players the club has had.

The Revolution have been idle through the World Cup pause. They return to league play on July 22, hosting Toronto FC at Gillette Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
