The most surprising thing from Thursday’s practice isn’t that the Patriots defense played well. It is that they got better after Mike Vrabel ripped them apart for their performance on Wednesday. Most teams crumble when a coach gets loud. This unit woke up and went to work instead.
Per Pats Pulpit, the second-year head coach actively challenged the defense to come back stronger after an uneven outing just one day prior. The result was immediate. New England’s front seven stopped Saquon Barkley in his tracks, and the secondary turned the ball over twice. It was a complete flip of the script from the day before.
Vrabel’s Challenge Sparks Energy
Linebacker K.J. Britt said the coach’s message hit home hard. He noted that this fire started from Vrabel challenging them earlier that morning and the night before. The culture shift is real. The players are responding to the demand for better play.
Britt refused to give the exact details of the challenge. That secrecy only makes the result more impressive. The team wanted to build off the coaching push and have fun with it. They did exactly that by flying around the field with purpose.
Once the pads came on, the competitive nature took over. The defense got their eyes in the right spots and made sure they could fly around and play ball.
Turnovers and Run Stop
The numbers tell the story of a unit finding its rhythm. The defense added two more interceptions to bring the total to seven over two days of work. Cornerback Marcus Jones was the star of the show. He grabbed both picks against Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts. Milton Williams applied pressure that would have resulted in a sack in actual play, leading to one such instance.
The run defense also fixed its issues from Wednesday. After the Eagles found success stressing the edge the day before, New England was markedly more sound. Milton Williams and Cory Durden helped shore up the line. Williams recorded a would-be sack and helped with a tackle for loss against Barkley.
Elijah Ponder also had a strong day. Despite facing one of the best tackle pairings in football, the second-year edge rusher delivered good pressure. He had a would-be sack in 11-on-11s and recorded a pass breakup near the goal line. The front seven is finally looking like a cohesive group.
Red Zone Work Remains
There is still room for improvement. The Patriots offense struggled to finish drives in the red zone. “Felt like we could have done more in the red zone,” one player noted. This area is a focus for the team this year. They have work to do to fix the scoring issues.
“That’s something for us to learn. It’s one of our focuses this year… so we got some work to do,” the team admitted. The joint practices end here, but the lessons stick. The defense proved they can bounce back from a bad day. That resilience will be needed all season long.
The Eagles offense did find success in the end-of-game drive with 45 seconds left on the clock. Jalen Hurts connected with Hollywood Brown for a touchdown over Kindle Vildor. Vildor replaced Charles Woods in that period.
