Payton Pritchard just scored 30 points against the Chicago Bulls on Friday night, and the Boston Celtics won by 14 points. That is a great stat, but the real story is what Joe Mazzulla wants next. The coach does not just want scoring; he wants a player who can stop the other team too. Pritchard proved he can make shots, but his defense has to get better for the team to win big games.

The scoring is easy, the stops are hard

Pritchard made 9 of 17 shots and grabbed 20 points in the first half alone. He is one of the best guards at creating his own shot, a fact Allen Iverson once called “the coldest white boy I’ve ever seen.” That praise sounds nice, but it does not win championships. The Celtics have won their last four games, yet they still let teams find open looks when they get tired. Pritchard admitted after the game that his “defensive activity and my rebounding have been poor” in the first four games, according to Boston.com. He knows the work is not done.

Mazzulla pushes for a complete player

Joe Mazzulla told reporters he loves Pritchard like a brother, but he also challenges him to be better. The coach said Pritchard’s performance against the Bulls was “the absolute best version of him.” That is high praise, but Mazzulla also noted that such energy is hard to keep up every single night. The team needs Pritchard to bring that same hustle when the clock ticks down and the legs get heavy. Boston beat Chicago by 32 points at one stage, but the Bulls made a huge push in the second half. They shot 11-of-29 from three-point range after the break.

Why the next game matters more

The Celtics will face Orlando Magic soon, and the defense must hold up. Pritchard said it is “hard to hold a team to 30 points” because they are NBA players who play with freedom when they are down big, according to the Boston Sports Journal. That reality will hit hard against a team like Orlando that can shoot the ball. Boston dominated the paint with 56 points on Friday, but they cannot rely on offense alone. The Bulls turned the ball over 16 times, leading to 21 Celtics points, but Orlando might not be that sloppy. Pritchard has the talent to be a two-way force, and the team needs him to show it.
