Shelley Duncan Leaves Yankees For Red Sox Role

The Yankees lost a key farm system coach Wednesday as Shelley Duncan jumped to Boston. Here is the surprising move that changes the rivalry.

The New England Patriots executed a prudent, low-stakes maneuver by re-signing defensive tackle Isaiah Iton. The franchise secured the 24-year-old on a single-year pact just before training camp began. While this acquisition lacks fanfare, it bolsters the essential depth required for a congested interior defensive line. Agent Sean Stellato relayed the specifics to ESPN’s Mike Reiss on Monday. With a need for additional bodies, Iton is an ideal fit.

A Familiar Face Returns

Iton was already integrated into the system last summer until a hip issue cut his season short. He recorded 42 defensive snaps during preseason play before being placed on injured reserve. His performance metrics included three tackles, one of which resulted in a loss. To open a roster slot, the Patriots released fellow defensive tackle Travis Shaw last Friday. Consequently, the interior defensive line group now totals nine players. Milton Williams and Christian Barmore remain the undisputed starters, while Cory Durden is secured as the third option. Iton will compete for a rotational role behind this primary trio.

Re-signing him indicates the coaching staff values his run-stopping ability. Although he lacks bulk at 6-foot-3 and 300 pounds, he remains effective. With Khyiris Tonga now in Kansas City, a void exists in the early-down rotation that Iton could fill, provided he avoids further injury. His return implies he has completely recovered from the hip ailment that sidelined him for the 2025 season. The organization did not issue him an exclusive rights free agent tender this past March, a choice likely driven by health concerns. Now that he is back, the roster appears significantly more complete.

Zero Cap Pain

The financial terms of this agreement are nearly too advantageous to be real. It is expected that Iton will have negligible impact on the team’s current salary cap. The new contract will likely mirror the ERFA tender he might have received previously. Such a deal would consist of one year with a non-guaranteed base salary of $885,000. Per Pats Pulpit, if the deal aligns with that tender, Iton will not qualify for Top 51 status. This stipulation means he only impacts the cap if he secures a spot on the final 53-man roster. It represents a classic “prove it” arrangement that costs the team nothing should he fail to make the cut.

The Verdict on Depth

This signing offers pure value for a franchise reconstructing its defensive front. The Patriots currently boast nine interior linemen, creating intense competition. The majority of these athletes will not survive the final roster cuts. Iton is already familiar with the playbook and the coaching staff. He has nothing to lose and much to gain. The coaching staff returned to the facility on Monday to prepare for camp. The first practice is scheduled for 10:15 a.m. ET next Saturday. If Iton can maintain his health, he has a genuine opportunity to earn a roster spot. The Patriots are fortifying the line without incurring significant expense.
