The shaky summer start is dead. Drake Maye and A.J. Brown are finally clicking at Patriots camp, and the chemistry looks real. Once the pads were on, the duo’s connection surged after four shorts practices where they struggled to align. This isn’t just hope; it is what you see with the eyes.
That’s the kind of visual confirmation that matters.
The quarterback and his new top target are building a bond that could define the season, moving past the initial confusion of those first four practice sessions where they couldn’t quite get on the same page. It’s happening now, and the results are showing up in the most important way possible: on the field.
Pads Make the Difference
The shift happened fast when the team moved to full gear. During high red-zone drills on Thursday, Maye completed four of his five passes to Brown. That session produced at least two would-be touchdowns on slants. The pair also delivered a massive play in full-team drills. Brown caught Maye’s initial pass of the day, a deep throw down the right sideline for over 40 yards. He beat Christian Gonzalez on a double move. “You feel like you know when things are clicking. More Than Just Drills
This success stems from more than just reps on the field. Since Brown arrived via a trade on June 1, the two have cultivated an off-field relationship. Maye noted that they talk and pull up old routes to understand how Brown likes to run them. “It is great for us to talk and pull up some old things that he has run and how he liked to run them and what he liked to do, and the routes for his different looks,” Maye said. That off-field work translates directly to on-field trust. Maye isn’t shying away from throwing to his star. He is looking for him on every play type, from short to deep. “Just giving more chances to him,” Maye said. “I am not going to shy away from him. That is how I play.”
The Path Forward
Mike Vrabel sees the progress and expects it to continue. The head coach noted that everyone tracks the numbers, but he is confident the duo will keep improving. “I am aware that everyone monitors the statistics and all other factors” I’m confident that they will continue to progress,” Vrabel said. The rest of the offense is feeding off this energy too. Maye found Hunter Henry, DeMario Douglas, and Mack Hollins for touchdowns in the same session. He also connected with Eli Raridon, Romeo Doubs, and Kayshon Boutte down the field. This is the rhythm the team needed to find. “I think you find that during training camp. You try to find a rhythm,” Maye said. The Patriots are starting to look like a team that can score points in a hurry.
